Historic Church Will Be Converted to Polk Presidential Hall

The Polk Ancestral Home

The Polk Ancestral Home has acquired a building for exhibits and education.

James K. Polk is often called our “Expansionist President” for adding about a third of the United States to the map. Now‚ Polk’s ancestral home in Columbia is getting an expansion of its own.

In January 2006‚ the James K. Polk Memorial Association purchased the 1882 Christian Church adjacent to the Polk Ancestral Home. The historic church is being converted into Polk Presidential Hall‚ which will be used for exhibits and educational programming.

“We knew expansion would be important for our future‚ because we don’t have space to do large changing exhibits right now‚” says Tom Price‚ curator at the James K. Polk Ancestral Home. “We have been using area church fellowship halls for educational programming. This will be a big benefit.”

The 1882 church was originally the Christian Church in Columbia and was later converted into office space. It is perhaps best remembered‚ however‚ as Columbia Business College.

“The Polk Home was fortunate enough to buy it through a capital campaign‚” Price says. “The building has a great deal of character and will retain its 1882 architectural features.”

Polk Presidential Hall will be the new site for the home’s monthly lecture series called “Polk’s America” as well as a summer camp for children.”
